Memory and instructions
Besides the request itself, three things guide Studio’s replies: memory, instructions, and the working folder’s instructions. None of them grants new permissions; they change how Studio replies, not what it may do.
Memory
Section titled “Memory”Memory keeps information about you and your recurring preferences, such as your writing style or the report format you prefer. Work rules and processes belong in instructions and skills.
Open Memory in the sidebar (or Settings → Memory):
- Use memory turns memory on and off.
- The text can be read and edited; save after changing it.
- Under advanced options, Memory capture chooses the connected account (OpenAI or Anthropic) that updates memory automatically.
Memory only keeps personal statements you make in the conversation. Files, AI replies, and retrieved history do not become personal preferences.
With your SquadOS account connected, use Sync to carry memory across computers. When the account’s version differs from this computer’s, Studio asks you to Review account version before replacing it.
Instructions
Section titled “Instructions”In Settings → Instructions:
- Your instructions: tell Studio how you like to work. It applies to all your conversations and lives in an
AGENTS.mdfile, with a 20,000-character limit. - Studio instructions: the app’s default behavior. Use View instructions to read the documents (read-only) and Reset to default to go back to SquadOS’s original text.
What each conversation read
Section titled “What each conversation read”Instruction files inside the working folder also apply to that folder’s conversations. In the conversation’s side panel, Access and memory shows what the conversation is using, and See the instructions read opens Conversation instructions: how many files were read, how much of the context window they take, and what was kept in memory.
