Edit and import Markdown documents
In Studio’s document editor, you can work with already formatted text: headings look like headings, lists display bullets, and bold text appears emphasized. The toolbar lets you change this content directly.
View and Edit
Section titled “View and Edit”Existing files open in View. In this mode, you can read, select, and copy content without changing it.
To make changes:
- Select Edit at the top of the editor.
- Click the passage you want to change and edit the text.
- Use the toolbar to apply headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, lists, quotes, links, or tables.
- Select View to return to reading.
Switching modes keeps the content and undo and redo history. New documents start in Edit.
Open a Markdown file
Section titled “Open a Markdown file”Open an .md or .markdown file in Files. The document appears formatted in the editor. Select Edit to start making changes.
New documents created through Create document use .md. Studio saves changes to the file in the working folder and displays the save status. Switching modes without editing keeps the file’s original text.
Import Markdown into the open document
Section titled “Import Markdown into the open document”Importing inserts content at the cursor or replaces the selected passage. The file you choose to import remains intact.
- Turn on Edit.
- Position the cursor or select the text you want to replace.
- Open Insert → Import Markdown.
- Choose an
.mdor.markdownfile, encoded in UTF-8, up to 5 MB. - Review the inserted content. Use Undo if you want to remove the import.
For example, a line such as # Business proposal becomes a heading, and lines starting with * or - become list items.
Paste Markdown content
Section titled “Paste Markdown content”Regular pasting recognizes structures such as headings, lists, and bold text. To explicitly indicate that the text should be interpreted as Markdown:
- Turn on Edit and position the cursor or select the passage you want to replace.
- Open Insert → Paste as Markdown.
- Paste the content into the Markdown text field.
- Select Insert and review the formatted result.
Pasted content can be undone as a single insertion. In View, pasting does not change the document.
Supported content
Section titled “Supported content”The editor preserves headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, bullet and numbered lists, nested lists, quotes, safe links, code, and simple tables. Tables can contain line breaks inside cells.
Images use local PNG or JPEG files. When importing or pasting Markdown into the open document, image paths must match local resources already available to that document. Remote images and paths outside the allowed folder are rejected.
Task lists with checkboxes, table column alignment, and embedded HTML are incompatible with this import. A simple table line break is an allowed exception. When content is incompatible, Studio displays a notice and preserves the current document.
Format and saving
Section titled “Format and saving”Markdown documents stay saved as Markdown. The tools available for this format respect what the file can preserve; per-passage font, size, color, and alignment are outside that formatting.
Existing HTML documents keep their format and rich formatting tools. Importing Markdown into an HTML document adds the formatted content to the HTML file without converting or renaming the original.
The editor saves changes automatically. If another program changes the file while you work, review the conflict notice and choose which version to keep before continuing.
